Mary McKenna Diamond Trophy Introduction

Woodenbridge Golf Club Launches

Mary McKenna Diamond Trophy Tournament

Friday, 5th September 2014:   The Ladies of Woodenbridge Golf Club are delighted to announce that they are launching an all -Ireland senior club championship for woman (over 60 years), which will be run in a similar way to the successful JB Carr Tournament for men.  The tournament will be called the Mary McKenna Diamond Trophy Tournament, after Mary McKenna MBE, Ireland’s greatest female golfer.

ILGU affiliated golf clubs from across Ireland will be invited to participate in the Mary McKenna Diamond Trophy Tournament for 2015.    The format for the tournament will be Scotch Foursomes Matchplay with each participating club selecting 10 lady members over the age of 60years (playing off full ILGU handicap + courtesy shot to the away team).

The competition will be run firstly at county level, then regional level and ultimately the finalists will play the semi-finals and finals over the last weekend in August 2015 at Woodenbridge Golf Club with a gala dinner and presentation by Mary Mc Kenna MBE who has kindly given her name to this prestigious tournament, which we hope, will become the largest inter club golf competition in the country for women.

Lady Captain of Woodenbridge Golf Club, Aileen Sheehan said “The members of Woodenbridge G. C. are very proud to launch and host this impressive event and anticipate great interest from ILGU affiliated golf clubs around the country.   We look forward to organising, what will be, a very prestigious annual event in the golfing calendar. “

One of the great features of this competition is that it brings together clubs that might not ordinarily meet.  The weekend programme begins on the Friday evening with a reception in Woodenbridge’s clubhouse for the finalists and a draw for the semi-finals which are played on the Saturday.   The final will take place on the Sunday and the presentation ceremony following a gala dinner.      The event is expected to be as popular, with lady golfers across Ireland as it has been with men over the past 18 years.
