Woodenbridge Golf Club
The first officially documented game of golf at Woodenbridge was back in 1884, though it’s thought that golf took place here even earlier. Then in 1894 the Club was opened to all who wanted to play, making Woodenbridge one of the oldest clubs in the country.
From the very first shots in Woodenbridge, women were invited to participate. This included a close circle of friends of the extended Bayly family and later ladies from outside the locality. Foremost in encouraging the women to take up golf were Colonel Bayly’s daughters, nieces and members of the Tottenham family.
A new era for Woodenbridge Golf Club as the course undergoes a significant redesign under the eye of Tom Travers, the then renowned Dun Laoghaire professional.
Woodenbridge Train Station, which opened in 1865 bringing passengers from Dublin and Rosslare, closed nearly 100 years later in 1964. Trains are still running by Woodenbridge every day and since 1884, the train line marks the crossing point to our club and course.
Up until the mid-90s Woodenbridge was a 9-hole course. In 1994 Paddy Merrigan was commissioned to design the additional 9-hole layout and extend Woodenbridge to a Par 71, 18-hole course. The new course was officially opened by the legendary Dr. J.B. Carr in June 1995.
The JB Carr Diamond Trophy was first competed for in 1996. Inaugurated by Woodenbridge Golf Club, this all-Ireland tournament has since grown into a major senior inter club competition for male players in the over 60s category.
Sunday July 1st saw Woodenbridge enter a new era in its long history with the official opening of its fine new clubhouse. Our much-loved old clubhouse was demolished in September 2000 and work commenced on site. Again, our guest of honor, Joe Carr, spoke of his long association with Woodenbridge, describing the relaxed feeling one gets when crossing the bridge.
The Mary McKenna Diamond Trophy was launched in 2014 by the ladies of Woodenbridge Golf Club. A leading competition for senior ladies in the over 60s category, it brings players from many clubs all over the country to compete.
